Special thanks to G. Michael Hopf for his support and for inspiring this song through his famous quote “Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And, weak men create hard times” from his 2016 novel Those Who Remain. (https://www.gmichaelhopf.com/)

Liner Notes by Tyler

During the summer of 2022, Tetsu and I recorded his debut EP at Rudiez Studios in Kobe, Japan. One day, we took a break from our session and strolled around Ikuta Shrine. Tetsu told me he missed how things used to be during his younger days, mentioning that people were more social and less tense back then. I tried to lighten the mood by telling him that it’s just a cycle – there are good times and bad times. It’s natural, and it never stops. G. Michael Hopf’s famous quote came to mind: “Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times.” I paraphrased this quote to Tetsu, and he seemed deeply moved by it. We dropped the subject, returned to the studio, and finished recording the EP. At the end of the summer, I returned to the USA to complete my college degree, and Tetsu and I went our separate ways.

When I returned to Japan the following winter, I visited Tetsu’s home and discovered that he had bought himself a piano as a birthday present. Over the past several months, he taught himself to play basic piano and eventually used it as a songwriting tool. Inspired by our conversation in the shrine the previous summer, he wrote a song called “Good Times.” It was the first song he had ever written on the piano. He narrated the story of our conversation exactly as it happened and paired it with a captivating chord progression and melody. Before we knew it, we had embarked on a new project that would become Tetsu’s full-length follow-up record. Amid the excitement of the song, one concern lingered on my mind: since Tetsu technically didn’t write the hook of the song, would this cause any issues? I wanted to make sure to reach out to G. Michael Hopf, the author of that famous quote. I told Tetsu that if we didn’t receive permission to use the quote, we wouldn’t be able to release the song. I sent Mr. Hopf an email, but due to his popularity as an author, I was unsure whether I would hear back from him or not. The next day, I received an email from him, granting us permission to use his quote in the song! Tetsu and I were elated and continued working on “Good Times.”

Almost exactly a year after Tetsu wrote “Good Times,” it was ready for release. The general theme of the song revolves around the nature of cyclicality, so we decided to release it on New Year’s Day as we moved into 2024. We hope you enjoy “Good Times,” and whenever you feel down, just remember, “Hey, it’s the same old cycle.”

Lyrics

Lyrics (Japanese)

I was walking down With my friend One fine September day in shrine Summertime Near the end While we had recording so fine Then I said man, I really miss my old days People more relaxed, as a fact Under the blue sky you laughed and said Hey, it's the same old cycle You will find another delightful life Cause! Good time make a weak man Weak man make a bad times Bad time make a strong man Strong man make a good times Blow, wind blow Go, crow fly from my window Ride, silver tide ride And tell me it's alright Then I started playing piano It's the only way not to be wino Look at the moon and she smiles and say Hey, take a little time away You will find a way Everyday Cause! Good time make a weak man Weak man make a bad times Bad time make a strong man Strong man make a good times
